Je conduis à Bayeux

Amiens Cathedral
After a petit dejeuner we checked out and put the bags into the car.  Bev wanted to have a look around Amiens Cathedral which is rated one of the better in France.  For me I think the one at Reims is more impressive in some ways.  However, this was the first one for Bev so she oohed and aahed her way around the impressive structure.  The fact that it has been around for close on 800 years and still standing is most impressive given the height of the roof in the main part of the Cathedral.  Since I was last there over three years ago they have moved traffic away from it which makes it seem to be more impressive in a way I cannot explain.

There was no time to do any more exploring of Amiens as I wanted to get to Bayeux that day and it was some 283 kilometres.  We took the shortest route which was the autoroute and its tolls.  Since I was last there they had changed the method of paying from giving cash to a cashier in a toll-booth to paying by credit card.  That of course brought up some possible problems some of which did not appear immediately; such as credit cards not working.

Honfleur street
Port of Honfleur
The weather was grey and drizzly with the cloud down very low, so low that some of the wind turbines were disappearing in the mist.  The route took us toward Le Havre and over the Seine on one of the most beautiful bridges.  It is worth looking up the picture on the internet as I am sure it will be featured.  There was a toll to go over it.  Just south of the bridge is Honfleur a very pretty little port.  We decided to call in there for a break.  We shared a croque monsieur which came with frites and salad.  We must have been hungry as we devoured the food.  Perhaps it being cold outside also encouraged the high calorie intake.  After wandering  for a bit and taking some photographs we continued our journey to Bayeux arriving there at about 4pm.  I had found a nice little hotel that was well reviewed in Trip Advisor.  Using my French I enquired about a room and was rewarded with a room that was in the annex.  It was very spacious, even luxurious for a two star hotel.  It was half the price of the room at the Thistle hotel in London and equally as luxurious and the toilet worked properly!!

Our hotel in Bayeux
We had hoped to see the Bayeux Tapestry that evening but by the time we had parked the car in a free parking area,  it had closed.  We wandered the little town as it was nice to get out had stretch the legs.  It was cool but comfortable enough as the wind was not blowing.  I think it would have been about 8°C. We ate a nice homely meal at the hotel.  It was well priced (I had a salad of duck breast that was superb and Bev enjoyed her first gallette). It was also a good opportunity to write the blog.

We love notre chien
I was rather tired after all the driving so it was nice to get another good nights sleep.
